Student facilities
From high-quality food and social spaces to one of the University's most distinctive libraries and sports clubs and societies, students at Harris Manchester have access to a wide range of facilities to make the most of your time at Oxford.
Catering
The College's Dining Hall is a fine example of a late-Victorian baronial-style hall, named after the Arlosh family, who gave the Hall in memory of their son, Godfrey. The Catering Team pride themselves on the high quality of the food and service, offering a wide-ranging menu selection; in particular, they seek to cater effectively for vegetarians, vegans, and those on special diets.
Normally, seventeen meals a week are provided in the Dining Hall during term time. Students who are resident in college should be aware that it is not possible to be self-catering, though you may be able to sign out of a small number of meals every term and receive credits in return.
While students may sign guests in to any meal, Monday and Wednesday evenings are reserved for formal dinners; on these occasions, members are expected to dress more formally and wear their academic gowns. There are also a number of special meals, such as the College’s Christmas Dinner and JCR Guest Night. Students living out of college are most welcome to take meals in college.
Shared kitchens are available for all live-in students who wish to use them (useful if you miss a breakfast!)
The Library and Quiet Room
The Tate Library is on the first floor of the college in the Main Building. It has reading spaces, monitors, printing and scanning facilities, an up-to-date book collection, and a self-issue system. More information can be found via the Library's website section.
The Quiet Room can be found on the Holywell Street side of the main site. With comfy sofas and a TV this is a room for all students to take a break from the bustle of college life.
Common Rooms and Bar
The Junior Common Room (JCR) is the association of undergraduate students at Harris Manchester. The JCR Committee is elected by all undergraduate students. Its role is to represent students within college and in the wider University, and to organise a variety of events throughout the year.
The JCR's space in the Main Building includes one of the few student-run bars in Oxford.
The Middle Common Room (MCR) is the association of postgraduate students at Harris Manchester. The MCR is located in one of the graduate houses on site, which also contains a kitchen for use by all members of the MCR. MCR members are also members of the JCR and have access to all JCR facilities.
There is a joint common room in another of the College’s buildings, with a TV, games console, board games and table football available for use by all students at Harris Manchester.
Sports facilities
Harris Manchester is ideally placed for sports. It is a short walk to the University Club, which houses an astroturf pitch, as well as the University Parks sporting facilities, which include tennis courts and cricket pitches. As we are a relatively small college, we often team up with Mansfield College and Wadham College for inter-collegiate sport, and Harris Manchester members often make up a sizeable contingent of the Wadham Boat Club.
Societies
For a full list of JCR societies (most of which are open to MCR members also) view the Harris Manchester JCR website.
