Tutor for Graduates
Professor Robert Klassen is Harris Manchester's Tutor for Graduates.
College advisors
Every graduate student is allocated a College Advisor, who is an academic member of staff in college. They are (as far as possible) related to your subject and act as a link between you and the college. They are able to advise on general academic matters, provide pastoral support, signpost you to other sources of support around the college and University, and discuss any difficulties you may be having in your department. They aren't expected to direct your academic work however!
We encourage students to meet with their advisors at least once a term (and we encourage advisors to meet with you too!). This doesn't have to be a formal meeting and could be lunch, a cup of coffee, a walk, or something more formal if you prefer.
If you are having any issues contacting your college advisor, please contact the Tutor for Graduates, Professor Robert Klassen.
Research skills
The transition from an undergraduate or taught masters degree to a research degree can be a big jump, but there's lots of support available.
Your supervisor will be your first point of contact and will help you develop your research skills. Your college advisor can also provide advice. We encourage you to be proactive in talking to both individuals and be up front with any troubles - they can't help if they don't know!
The Medical Sciences Division has also collated a Researchers' Toolkit, which may be helpful to all research students, not just those studying Medical Sciences.
Guidance for taught graduates
Graduate study is often more specialised than study you will have completed as an undergraduate. If you've studied at Oxford at an undergraduate level, it may be odd to find that all of your teaching takes place in your department and there aren't any tutorials in college, but the principles are still the same!
The University has put together a good page about the skills you may want to develop to get the most out of your graduate study.
Resources for part-time students
Accomodation
While we are unable to guarantee rooms for part-time students, if you will be in Oxford we might be able to offer you accommodation for your residential weeks. You should email housekeeper@hmc.ox.ac.uk to check on availability.
The University Club and the Department for Continuing Education offer overnight accommodation. You may also find appropriate accommodation advertised in the Gazette or through University Rooms (an external website).
Student parents
You may find our page for student parents helpful. If you would like to be put in touch with other Student Parents, please email victoria.lill@hmc.ox.ac.uk.
