In a wide-ranging discussion of many of the current issues facing governments and the public, Professor Behrens underlined the critical role that food production plays in national security – and how the risks continue to be underplayed.
He stressed that although technological advances in energy production are helping to lower increases in global emissions faster than we might think, the way we consume and produce food continues to pose a major challenge. The only plausible solution, based on his research, is a wholesale move to a more plant-rich diet.
Backed by figures from scientists and researchers, Professor Behrens also offered the audience a number of practical options to contribute towards lowering emissions – at both a personal and institutional level.
